The two men, still unnamed, open the scene by describing Ender’s progress. Ender is now the head of a launch group. He is also stuck at a game called the Giant’s Drink. Another boy who got stuck at the same game once killed himself. One of the men seems concerned that Ender will become like the suicidal boy.

Both men are primarily concerned with the fact that the launch group that Ender leads isn’t doing so well. One of the men, who we finally learn is Graff, admits that Ender’s poor leadership skills is not Ender’s fault but is his own fault.

The scene turns to Ender who is entering the Battleroom with other boys. Ender learns a few moves on how to maneuver in the Battleroom by himself. The room doesn’t have any gravity so moving is a challenge. By watching the other boys, especially Bernard and Alai, Ender learns a few tricks about moving around.

Eventually, Ender toys with a gun that was given to each boy. The gun seemed harmless enough when he shot it outside of the Battleroom (it didn’t do anything), but now as he shoots in the Battleroom he is able to shoot both cold and warm beams.

Ender watches safely from the wall while other boys drift around the room as they try to figure out how to maneuver. Eventually, Ender pushes off the wall towards Alai. He too is just clinging, watching. When Ender approaches Alai, he realizes that he’s slightly off target and he’s on a collision course with Alai himself. Alai is able to reel in Ender by grabbing his hand.

The two boys decide to try teaming up with each other so that they can push off each other in the zero gravity atmosphere. By helping each other, they are able to maneuver themselves to another wall.

Next, the two boys decide it’s time to try out their guns. To figure out what the guns do, the boys shoot themselves in the feet. Most of their legs, including their feet, freeze up.
Then, the boys decide to gather their friends, Shen and Bernard. Together, the four boys freeze up all of the
other boys. Dap comes by later to unfreeze them.

With their group in place, the boys have unknowingly formed a launch group. Soon, Alai is the one chosen to be in charge of this group.

The scene shifts to Ender during Free Play. He is playing a game in which he’s a giant mouse. He’s conquered just about every aspect of this particular game, but for the Giant. He always fails at beating the Giant, however, he decides to try him again.

The Giant goes through its normal scheme of commentary; afterwards, Ender gets to start the game. Ender has lost this game many times. He must choose between cups of a deadly liquid to drink. Unfortunately, as he’s learned in the past, both of the drinks will lead to his defeat.

Ender goes through the game a few times, each time dying. He’s intent, though, on proceeding to the Fairyland that supposedly follows the Giant’s game. Finally, during one final attempt at the game, instead of going for the drinks, Ender goes for the Giant’s eye. He pokes the eye and goes inside of the Giant’s eyehole.

The Giant is defeated and Ender is welcomed to the Fairyland by a talking bat. Ender is totally ashamed of the method in which he won the game.
