Colonel Graff and Major Anderson start off the chapter by describing their new plans for Ender. They are going to subject him to new, unfair games that have been created by Major Anderson.

The scene then turns to Ender who is being given his own army to lead. Ender is shocked to learn from Anderson that the new army he will command is the Dragon Army, an army that they had gotten rid of a long while back because of its bad performances.

Anderson tries to comfort Ender with the fact that some of his soldiers come from a pack who should have graduated, but were held back to join his group. The other soldiers in his group, on the other hand, are brand new to the games. To make matters more interesting, Ender is not allowed to trade his soldiers for other soldiers from different armies.

When Ender gets a chance to get to know more of his soldiers he realizes that things are worse off than what he expected. As anticipated, many of his soldiers are brand new to the games. The others seem to have very little experience at battling.

One of the first lessons that Ender teaches the group revolves around gravity. He has to teach them how gravity works in the Battleroom and how they can best position themselves when confronting the enemy.

Ender, eventually, figures out which soldiers are the best and which are the worst. One of the sharpest soldiers is a little boy who bluntly disobeyed Ender at one point. His name is Bean.

When they first begin training, Ender makes a spectacle of Bean and almost makes it seem like he is a teacher’s pet. In doing so, Ender mimics the way the people in charge treated him when he first arrived at Battle School. The other boys frown upon the compliments that are fed to Bean and they don’t like him because of it.

Later, Bean approaches Ender about the way he was mistreated. Bean puts it to Ender straight: stop messing with me or I won’t be compliant. Bean even has the nerve to ask for a toon to lead. Ender strikes Bean a deal. If Bean demonstrates his worthiness and his ability to command, then he will get a toon of his own.

When Ender gets a chance to rest that night he begins to think back at his own training. Ender realizes how exactly Graff worked to shape Ender into the person he is today. Graff worked to isolate him to better strengthen his personality and to help Ender earn the respect of the other soldiers. Ender became an outsider due to Graff’s actions and in doing so, Ender built up the traits that he himself needed to become a better leader. Ender knows he must follow in Graff’s footsteps when training Bean, but at the end he will be compassionate towards Bean.

During the next practice session, Major Anderson delivers a painful blow to Ender. He tells Ender of a few new rules that have randomly been instated. He can no longer work with people from other armies in the Battleroom and he must schedule his practices way ahead of time. He can’t just show up at the Battleroom any more for practice.

Ender bumps into Alai some time later. They talk about the reality of the situation and how they can’t work together any more like they once did. It pains Ender to lose a friend in this manner. He knows that their friendship is as good as gone.

Luckily, though, Ender is confident that he will get over the pain since he was able to get over a much deeper pain a while back. When the leaders of Battle School used Valentine to help Ender pass the End of the World game, Ender felt much resentment and pain for their actions. They used his sister and she allowed it. It was a pain much greater than this one that Ender feels now.

Although he knows he will get over this pain, Ender’s resentment towards the administrators of Battle School is now burning stronger than ever.
