The chapter opens with the two unnamed men talking about Ender again. They were impressed with his actions against Stilson since it showed both brains and brawn. One of the men once used the monitor to watch over Ender. Even though the monitor is no longer implanted in Ender, the man still seems to be watching over him. Both men are now curious about what will happen between Ender and Peter since Ender is no longer being monitored.

The scene then proceeds to Ender who is talking to his sister Valentine. They are discussing the removal of his monitor just as Peter approaches. Peter is quite happy that Ender doesn’t have the monitor anymore. Without people watching over Ender any more, he suggests that they go off to play a game together. Soon, they head off to play buggers and astronauts.

Ender puts on a bugger mask so he can play the role of the bad guys. While doing so, he can’t help but wonder if the buggers put on human masks when they play the same game on their planet.

During the game, Peter quickly takes Ender down. He tells Ender that he’s going to operate on him, a bugger, to find out how he works.

Then, Peter begins to threaten Ender even further. He nearly suffocates his little brother while describing how he could kill him and make it look accidental.
It is revealed that Peter was unhappy with having another sibling since he himself felt that he should have been chosen by the government. Peter was rejected by the government and so Ender was born.

Valentine interjects and tries to get Peter to stop. Peter threatens her with death too. Valentine outsmarts Peter by pointing out that he can’t make two deaths look like an accident. She also points out that if Peter wants to become a government official then he needs to keep a clean slate.

Peter, then, warns Valentine that one day he will kill Ender when she doesn’t expect a thing. He promises her that she will forget about his threat until one day when he actually does take out Ender.

After a while, their parents get home. Their father seems happy that Ender was not taken by the government after he lost his monitor. Ender, however, is not so happy with this fact. He’s not just a third, but a third who has been rejected by the government.

Peter, of all people, brings Ender a bit of comfort at the end. Thinking that Ender is asleep, Peter comes by and lets Ender know that he loves him.
