Colonel Graff and Major Anderson once again begin the chapter by discussing the plan to continue pushing Ender as far as they can. They also talk about their concerns over the ideas floating about the net regarding the Warsaw Pact. It is feared that one day if the buggers are defeated then the Warsaw Pact will be terminated and the world will fall apart.
The scene goes to Ender who is lying down and thinking. He has come very far with his army. He has created a structure for his toons unlike any ever created before. He is shaping one of the best armies that the school has ever made and he knows it.
Ender’s rest is interrupted by a message: it is time for his army to get ready to face the Rabbit Army in the Battleroom. He gets his army together and they rush off to fight.
During the battle, Ender’s goal is to separate the formation that the Rabbit Army has made, thus confusing them. Ender’s toons have some bright, experienced leaders like Crazy Tom of the C toon and Han Tzu (aka Hot Soup) of the D toon. Together, they are able to quickly take out the Rabbit Army.
Ender is impressed with the way that the leader of the Rabbit Army, Carn Carby, handles himself. He is not full of himself like other commanders.
Ender gives the reward of time to his soldiers for their victory. They get a full thirty minutes for breakfast and they’ll get to depart from their practice time early so that they can shower.
During practice, we learn a little about how the soldiers perceive Ender. They seem to know that through and through he is their leader. He is not a friend, but he is friendly. He is especially patient and friendly when he works with them on an individual basis.
Later, Ender gets to enter the cafeteria for commanders. It’s his first time there and eyes narrow in on him when he first enters. He has the best record among all the other commanders so far.
Dink Meeker approaches Ender and they talk for a bit in a cold, unfriendly conversation. Dink warns Ender that he will not be able to beat his army since Ender is the one who taught him all his strategies.
Dink leaves and Ender realizes that his position as commander is causing him to lose friends. Even Petra, in the distance, purposely doesn’t pay attention to Ender.
Carn Carby, though, comes by to speak to Ender briefly. He is kind and friendly. He even throws his support behind Ender. He wants Ender to win against the next army that the Dragons face. Carby is supportive because he has been trying to describe Ender’s tactics to other commanders. They think Carby is lying about Ender’s strategies; so, if Ender wins his next battle, the other commanders will be forced to believe him.
The next day, Ender receives news of the next army he will be facing. Today, Dragon Army will be competing against Petra’s Phoenix Army. The news is a shock to Ender’s army who knows it’s unheard of to have battles scheduled so close together. Luckily, they are up for the challenge.
When they do battle, Ender beats the Phoenix Army.
After a week of battling, Ender’s army is ranked at the very top. He has won every battle that he has been challenged to. His successes bring about a sense of admiration from some of the commanders and a sense of jealousy among other commanders.
Ender fears, though, that his strategies will be deciphered by other commanders, so he begins to study old videos of the First and Second Invasions in order to learn from them. Surprisingly enough, he begins to see strategies that the
buggers used that he too can implement. Surprising to Ender is that there isn’t much to watch on Mazer Rackham’s final battle in which he triumphs over the buggers.
After a week of battling with his army, Anderson pulls Ender aside and brings him to Graff for a conversation. The two administrators ask why Ender has been watching the old war footage. Frustrated by their questions, Ender lets his anger get the best of him and he demands a challenge, a battle against a suitable army. The administrators are pleased to deliver and they let Ender know that he will be meeting against Bonzo’s Salamander Army in a few minutes.
Once Ender’s army is at the door to enter the Battleroom, Ender deploys a new strategy: freeze some of the bigger boys so that the younger boys can position themselves behind them and use them as shields. The younger/older boy duos are the first to be thrown out the door, while the rest of the army follows behind them. The new strategy is a success and the Dragon Army defeats the Salamander Army.
Later that night, Ender has a personal conversation with Bean. He puts Bean in charge of a new toon and he asks Bean to be clever and creative with tactics. Ender wants Bean’s toon to act in unique ways during battles and he knows Bean is the smartest boy out there to take the task.
