  CATCHING FIRE -- CHAPTER 18
Caesar realizes what just has happened, and he gives Cinna major credit for the amazing spectacle. Katniss knows that in the Capitol people see the mockingjay symbol as the latest fab, whereas in the other districts it’s seen as a sign of rebellion.

Katniss realizes that Cinna has now put himself in danger. President Snow will not be happy with what Cinna did to Katniss’ dress.

Before long, it’s Peeta’s turn to be interviewed. His interview is pretty smooth-rolling until Caesar asks him about his marriage to Katniss being canceled for the Quell. Peeta, then, reveals that he is already married to Katniss. He speaks of the wedding ceremony that the people in his district follow, involving a simple toasting of bread. Months before the Quarter Quell was announced, he apparently went through the traditional wedding ceremony with Katniss without anybody knowing about it.

The audience totally buys into Peeta’s lie and they’re apparently very saddened by the whole mess of things. Peeta, however, takes things one step further and announces the thing that makes the whole situation all that more horrible: Katniss is pregnant. Katniss is stunned by this lie and she just stands there. Meanwhile, the crowd goes into a saddened frenzy.

Caesar cannot appease the audience and so the anthem is played loudly to conclude the interviews. For some reason, the victors from each district take each other’s hands and stand up. They have just shown a sign of unity that reflects the unity of the Dark Days.

The cameras are turned off, the lights are also turned off, and the victors must find their way back to the Training Center. Katniss and Peeta make it back up in an elevator. Haymitch comes up next and he describes the chaos that has ensued. Everybody has been forced back home.

Katniss and Peeta ask Haymitch to thank Effie for them, since they know they will not be seeing her again. Knowing that they also won’t see Haymitch again before the Quarter Quell, they say their goodbyes and Haymitch tells Katniss to “remember who the enemy is.”

The two spend the night together in Katniss’ room. They are stirred when Cinna and Portia get there to help them get ready for the Quell. Soon, they individually leave in hovercrafts to get to the arena.

Eventually, Katniss is left alone with Cinna in the Launch Room just before the Quell begins. Cinna fixes Katniss’ hair up in braids and then he gives her the original mockingjay pin that Madge gave to her before the Hunger Games a few months back.

Katniss stands on the launch plate which will lift her to the arena. Just before she’s lifted up, she is forced to watch as Peacekeepers barge into the room and begin beating up Cinna into a bloody pulp. Katniss is helpless as there is a glass wall on the launch plate surrounding her. Just after the motionless Cinna is taken away, the launch plate rises up.
