Katniss is taken back by the sad emotions that are hitting her prep team (Octavio, Flavius, and Vena). They like Katniss and the perks that come with being there to support her. They are filled with unhappiness as they get her ready. Their reactions help Katniss realize that maybe the people in the Capitol have emotions, after all.
Cinna helps Katniss prepare, next, and he lets her know that he puts his emotions into his work, so she will not see any disappointment or sadness in him as he gets her ready. They break for lunch, and return to prepping. Cinna dresses her in a jumpsuit for the opening ceremonies that glows like hot embers. She also wears a black half-crown, similar to the one she won after the Games. The crown glows like fire and covers Katniss’ face in shadows.
Katniss heads off to the Remake Center where she is surprised to find tributes and mentors socializing. She tries to remain invisible, but she is approached by Finnick Odair, an incredibly popular tribute who stands out as a favorite for several reasons: he won the Games when he was fourteen (he now is twenty-four); he is incredibly good-looking; and he is possessed with amazing trident and net-throwing skills that won him the Games (his district relies on fishing, so trident/net skills were natural to him).
Finnick comments on how sad it is that Katniss can no longer enjoy the spoils of her last victory. Katniss says that she doesn’t have a fondness of the finer things in life, like jewels, and she asks Finnick what he does with his wealth. He admits that he uses secrets now like he would have used money. He asks for Katniss’ secrets and she lets him know that all of her secrets are out in the open. Just then, Peeta approaches and Finnick walks off.
Peeta and Katniss converse, and at one point Peeta calls
the other tributes a “freak show.” He almost seems happy that they haven’t yet come to their level of glamour.
The two then discuss how they should enter when they are presented during the opening ceremony. They know they must showcase their love for each other by holding hands.
When their time to enter finally comes they ignore the audience and look pretty strong and intimidating as they make their introductory route. As she looks around, Katniss snickers a bit at the costumes that the other tributes have, some of which try to mimic those of Cinna. Many of their accessories seem forced and unnatural.
At the end of the ceremony, the tributes meet up with their mentors and prep teams in the Training Center. Haymitch is meeting with both his friend Chaff and the other District Elven tribute, Seeder. Both are older and both seem pleased with Katniss as is apparent with the hugs and kisses they give her. Katniss has been worried about Rue’s and Thresh’s families, and she learns from Seeder that their families are still alive.
Before long, the tributes are forced back up the elevators. Before they make their way into an elevator, Katniss and Peeta are met by Johanna Mason from District Seven. She’s from the lumber district and dressed like a tree, a costume she despises. Before they even get on the elevator, she disposes of her costume and is left there naked. She talks away to Peeta on the elevator trip.
When Katniss and Peeta exit the elevator and are alone, Peeta remarks that people are hugging, kissing, and even getting naked in front of Katniss on purpose. They know she is incredibly pure and they are teasing her about it.
Before long, Haymitch and Effie pop out of another elevator. Effie remarks on the two Avox attendants approaching them from a distance. There is the old Avox that Katniss became friends with just before she entered the Hunger Games, and there is a new Avox that Katniss recognizes as Darius. Darius was an easy-going Peacekeeper from District Twelve who Katniss knew well. Darius even stood up for Gale when he was being whipped by Romulus Thread, and apparently he is now living as an Avox as a punishment for his actions.
