Othello is questioning Emilia to see if she knows anything about what Desdemona has been accused of. Emilia stands by her lady and tells him that she hasn’t seen nor suspected anything wrong. She chastises whoever put these thoughts into Othello’s head.

Othello asks Emilia to go get Desdemona. When she leaves, Othello totally dismisses everything that Emilia has said. Desdemona enters and Emilia leaves.

Othello begins to press Desdemona for answers. Desdemona is baffled by his accusations. She defends herself against what he is saying. She asks what sin she has committed and he begins to call her a whore. No matter what she says, Othello does not believe her. He is certain that she has been cheating on him. Othello exits.

Emilia returns and Desdemona asks that she go get Iago so that she may speak to him. Emilia comments on what a change of attitude this is. One minute she’s arguing with Othello, and now she’s asking for Emilia’s husband. Emilia leaves to get Iago.

When Emilia and Iago return, Desdemona begins to vent to them about what Othello is accusing her of. Iago acts surprised. Emilia comments on how it must be some villain who put these ideas in Othello’s head. She remarks on how it was probably one of Othello’s men who started these rumors; and she says that he probably did it to achieve a higher position. Iago responds by saying that there isn’t such a man who would do so.

Desdemona, then, gets to the heart of the matter. She asks Iago what she can do to win over her husband again. Iago tells her that it’s only government matters that really have brought Othello into this bad mood. He says that things will be okay. Desdemona and Emilia exit for dinner.

Roderigo comes along to speak to Iago. Roderigo is beginning to see that Iago simply used him for his wealth. He says that he is going to speak to Desdemona about everything. Iago praises Roderigo for showing such courage. He then strikes another deal with Roderigo. Iago tells him that he will soon enough be with Desdemona if he helps to kill Cassio. The two leave while Iago continues to try to convince him to commit the crime of murder.
